Compare Cézanne’s constructed forms, Van Gogh’s active strokes and Gauguin’s broad areas of color. These artists developed distinct approaches from their encounters with Impressionism. Post-Impressionism is a later umbrella term, not a group with one shared method; Seurat’s organized color also connects it with the more specific Neo-Impressionist movement. Look at what the marks do: do they steady a shape, animate a surface or turn a scene into a pattern? The term was introduced by critic Roger Fry for an exhibition in 1910, after several of these artists had died. It helps describe relationships among their experiments without implying that they worked toward one common result. Connected places: Paris · Provence · Brittany · Tahiti.
