In the early 1500s Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian lifted Italian painting to what was later called the High Renaissance. Mannerism, a highly finished and self-consciously stylish art of idealized figures after Michelangelo, chose color for decoration and expression rather than nature. It spread from Italy across Europe. Connected places: Florence · Rome · Venice.
