The oldest painting in the pavilion was made in China under the Liao dynasty (916 to 1125). Under the Mongol Yuan, many scholars refused to serve the new government and retired to the south to write, play the qin and paint. Their literati painting, often in ink on paper, became the cutting edge of the age. Connected places: North China · Jiangnan.
