Notice the woodland textures, open skies and everyday rural work. Around Barbizon and the Forest of Fontainebleau, artists made landscape a subject worth sustained attention in its own right. Outdoor studies and studio painting worked together; Daubigny’s river scenes and support for younger painters connect this varied circle with Impressionism. Follow how a path, river or stand of trees gives structure to a seemingly ordinary view. These painters differed in technique and subject, and the Barbizon label was applied after their circle had developed. Their attention to local landscape offered an important precedent for the Impressionists, without making every Barbizon work an outdoor sketch.
