The Blue Rider was a loose circle of artists who came together in Munich in 1911, among them Vasily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Franz Marc. They sought feeling and spirit in art, through abstraction, symbols and free marks, and they reached out to musicians and performers. The name is said to come from a Kandinsky painting of 1903. The Blue Rider was a loose circle of artists in Munich, formed in 1911 and led by Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. They shared a love of abstract form and bright color, which they believed could carry spiritual meaning, and published their almanac in May 1912. The circle broke up when the First World War began in August 1914: Kandinsky had to return to Russia, and Marc and August Macke were killed in the fighting. Connected places: Munich · Murnau.
