Artists north of the Alps took up the Renaissance a little after Italy. In the German lands Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Hans Baldung Grien and Albrecht Altdorfer were its masters, in painting, drawing and print. Altdorfer, close to humanist circles and working for Emperor Maximilian, pioneered landscape as a subject of its own. Connected places: Nuremberg · Wittenberg · The Netherlands.
