Look closely at the separate dots and touches of color, then step back to see how they build a scene. Seurat, Signac and their contemporaries used deliberate color relationships to organize light and form. Their approach spread between France and Belgium, linking Impressionist subjects with experiments that also encouraged the Fauves. Pointillism names the dotted technique; Neo-Impressionism also describes the artists and ideas around these color experiments. Notice how repeated marks can steady a composition even when the subject is bustling modern life. The small touches vary from artist to artist, and their visual effect changes with viewing distance.
