Follow the shadow from the tree into the valley, then compare the dense violet marks inside it with the more open yellow-green foreground.
In this 1909 oil painting, a large shadow curves across the hillside beneath a fir tree. Cross varies the density and size of his touches, leaving some of the primed canvas visible in the foreground. Cool shade and warmer sunlit ground remain distinct, yet both are built from a lively mixture of colors.
