Look at the grain of the wood running down through the red, then at how a few hard white cuts build Schmidt-Rottluff’s face.
From 1906 the Brücke sent a yearly portfolio of prints to its passive members, friends who paid to support the artists, and each portfolio was given to one artist. The fourth, in 1909, was Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s. Kirchner made its cover, a woodcut in red with a portrait of his friend. Down the left side run a small landscape, a portrait and a nude, the three main subjects of the group.
