Chinese painting

Follow the brush through a rock, branch or written character: pressure, speed and ink tone can matter as much as the depicted subject. Chinese painting encompasses many traditions, from richly colored court pictures to spare scholar paintings. Inscriptions and collectors’ seals may add later voices to an image. Scrolls, album leaves and screens offer different ways of looking, and connections with calligraphy and poetry help explain why a painting can be read as well as viewed. Connected places: China.
