Follow the red trees along the low banks, then look up through the mist to the pale blue peak at the left.
This album leaf belongs to a set of landscapes in the styles of earlier masters. Its title names Gao Kegong (1248–1310), an important painter of the Yuan dynasty. Lan Ying builds the mountains from soft washes of color without outlines, above a band of trees in red leaf. The Art Institute bought the leaf in 1958.
