Find the two small men seated on the bank at the lower left, then follow the red trunk of the pine up through the crowded foliage.
Lan Ying’s inscription names his model, Conversation by the River by Wang Meng, and asks a Mr. Ji’ou for his instruction. After the open spaces of the Ni Zan leaf, this page is crowded: tangled trees and a pine with a reddish trunk close around two men talking at the water’s edge. The Art Institute links such dense, textured landscapes with Wang Meng, whose Quiet Life in a Wooded Glen hangs in the Liao and Yuan room.
