Look at the band of empty paper between the thin trees on the near bank and the low hills on the far shore, and at the fold down the middle of the leaf.
This leaf comes from Lan Ying’s album Landscape in the Style of Ancient Masters, whose pages follow earlier painters; here, as the title says, Ni Zan. The Asian Art Museum describes Ni Zan’s style as pale and dry, with sparse vegetation. Lan Ying was a professional painter, and the Cleveland Museum of Art notes that he widened his range by imitating the methods of many schools and masters.
