An old man with a staff and a boy stand under a great pine that leans out from a cliff, looking out over water toward distant hills. Ren Yi painted the round picture in ink and light color on silk and dated it 1883. Like Hu Gongshou’s leaf in this room, it came to the Art Institute from Florence Ayscough and Harley Farnsworth MacNair, who had lived in Shanghai.
