Look at Adam’s hand pressed to his chest, then up at the apples hanging just above his head.
Cranach and his workshop painted Adam and Eve many times, and the Art Institute counts this pair of tall, narrow panels, made between 1533 and 1537, among the finest. The way the two figures stand follows Albrecht Dürer’s renowned paintings and prints of the first couple. Adam stands under the apple tree, a leafy sprig in one hand and the other pressed to his chest.
