Lucas Cranach the Elder
1472–1553 · Northern Renaissance · 16 works
Lucas Cranach the Elder worked as court painter in Wittenberg from 1505, producing portraits, religious images, and mythological subjects with the help of a busy workshop. His art became closely associated with the Protestant Reformation, including portraits of Martin Luther, while his range also extended to courtly hunts and classical stories. Slender figures and carefully controlled outlines give many of his paintings a distinctive elegance. Paintings and prints show how a workshop could return to a subject in different formats, adapting familiar arrangements for new viewers and patrons.
