Find the blue in the shadows under the dogs, then look for the place where the two white bodies overlap and almost become one shape.
Marc painted these two dogs in 1909 or 1910 in pale whites and creams, with the shadows in blue. About 1910 a Munich dealer sold the canvas to the physicist Ludwig Hopf and his wife, Alice. The family still had it after they were forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1939: Alice Hopf lent it to an exhibition in Dublin in 1944, and it was sold only in 1958.
