Let your eye fall with the white water from top to bottom, then compare the hard, angled shapes of the mill at left with the round trees at right and find the animal drinking at lower right.
Marc painted this mill in 1913, after a stay in the town of Merano in the South Tyrol. The Art Institute reads the title as the near-magical balance he found there between human life and nature: buildings and a red mill wheel at left, trees and animals at right. A sheet of white water falls between the two halves.
