Follow the curving white lines of the horses against the black, then find the small M cut at lower left and the animal bending its head at lower right.
This woodcut of 1913 shows horses and a rider in a riding school, cut in hard black and white. Marc, a member of the Blue Rider in Munich, made animals his main subject, in prints as well as paintings. The block is small, about 27 by 29 centimeters, and the print came to the Met in 1984 with the bequest of Scofield Thayer.
