Follow the three white horses from the blue block at left toward the pink blossoms, then look at the painted frame and the colors it repeats from the picture.
The Art Institute dates this painting to a single day, 18 January 1911, the year the Blue Rider began. A troika, a carriage pulled by a team of three horses, crosses the picture under a sky of bands of color. Kandinsky painted the frame himself, and the museum links both the troika and the frame to the folk and medieval art the group looked to.
