Compare the tall dark trees with the low strip of meadow, then look for the small figures near the center and the light on the water at left.
A wide, flat meadow runs under a cloudy sky to a line of tall trees, with a glint of water at left. Small figures and animals stand in the grass near the center, dwarfed by the trees. The Met dates this panel only broadly, to about 1845 to 1860, and Rousseau painted it on wood rather than canvas.
