Théodore Rousseau

1812–1867 · Barbizon School · 16 works

Rousseau gave the forests and farms around Barbizon sustained attention. In this Fontainebleau landscape, small figures share the view with trees and open ground. The woodland itself becomes a subject worth studying, part of a shift toward familiar places in nineteenth-century landscape painting.
