Compare the white dress of the seated girl with the darker woods around her, then follow the glances between the girls and the two dogs.
Three girls gather under a tree, one holding a small dog on her lap while a larger dog comes up to them. Diaz painted the group on a small wooden panel with loose, broken strokes. It belonged to the Chicago collector Henry Field, and his widow gave it to the Art Institute in 1894.
