Find the three tiny babies along the bottom edge, each drawn with a few repeated lines that catch a squirming movement.
This page comes from Raphael’s so-called pink sketchbook, ten small sheets of mothers and children now shared among Lille, the British Museum, a private collection and Cleveland. He drew in metalpoint on paper coated pink, in a book small enough to carry on his journey from Florence to Rome in 1508. The baby’s head follows the Christ Child in Leonardo’s Benois Madonna, though Raphael turned the eyes up and opened the mouth.
