Find the boats moored along the canal and the two small figures on the bank, then look up past the temple halls to the pagoda at the upper left.
Tiger Hill rises a few miles northwest of Suzhou, Shen Zhou’s home city, and its history reaches back to the ancient state of Wu, about the 5th century BCE. His Twelve Views of Tiger Hill take the viewer on a visit, from the boat landing at the foot of the hill up to the Cloudy Cliff Monastery. Here the visit begins at the canal mooring, with the monastery’s pagoda seen far off on the hill.
