Raphael
1483–1520 · High Renaissance and Mannerism · 2 works
For centuries Raphael has been recognized as the supreme High Renaissance painter. Born in Urbino, son of the court painter Giovanni Santi, he learned from Perugino and became a noted painter of portraits and Madonnas in Florence. In 1508 he was called to Rome to work for Pope Julius II, and stayed there until he died at 37.
