Pick out the eight seated mothers and children across the two rows, then find the donkey sketched at the top.
Late in his career Veronese and his workshop painted a number of calm scenes of the Holy Family resting in the countryside during the flight into Egypt. On this sheet he tried out eight versions of the seated Virgin and Child in two rows, adding the young John the Baptist, Joseph or a donkey to some. Unusually, the sketches prepared finished drawings in light and shade, now in London, Berlin and Cambridge, Massachusetts, rather than paintings.
