Find the scholar seated in his pavilion among the bare trees, then cross the water to the long, empty bridge in the distance and the small boat below it.
A scholar sits alone in his studio among bare trees, between snowy cliffs and a wide stretch of still water. The Cleveland Museum of Art counts this scroll of 1584 among the rare paintings to survive from the early Joseon period. Kim Si lived as a recluse after his father fell from power, and the museum reads the scene less as an ideal retreat than as his own state of mind, his family’s glory long past.
