Look at the boy’s face seen through the bottom of the glass, then at the patch of light the wine carafe throws onto his white shirt.
Annibale Carracci painted this boy drinking in 1582 or 1583, early in the reform of painting that he, his brother Agostino and their cousin Ludovico based on close study of nature. The rough canvas, the plain subject and the face bent by the glass show that approach, which the Cleveland Museum of Art places between the polish of Mannerism and the drama of Caravaggio. In 1896 it was sold in London as a Velázquez.
