Follow the diminishing line of lamps toward the observation platform, then notice how little of the city itself is visible.
This view was painted in winter 1887, near the Montmartre apartment Van Gogh shared with his brother Theo. The Moulin de Blute-Fin had ceased operating as a mill and become a visitor attraction. Its observation tower offered views of Paris, while the neighborhood still contained gardens, quarries, and surviving windmills.
