Look for yellow beside purple, then follow the short strokes curving around the fruit across the cloth.
In autumn 1887, Van Gogh made several still lifes of seasonal fruit. Here, the table becomes a place to test strong color contrasts: yellow against purple, red against green, and blue against orange. The marks around the fruit are as active as those describing its rounded surfaces.
