Compare the bent worker with the sloping roof: both are built from the same subdued greens and browns.
Van Gogh painted this cottage during his years in Nuenen, in the Netherlands, before moving to Paris. It belongs to a group of village homes he encountered on walks. The close tonal relationship between the worker, building, and soil offers a useful contrast with the brighter palette of his later French paintings.
