Start with the repeated red marks of the wallpaper, then search for the people and furniture within them. Which outlines are easiest to lose in the pattern?
This color lithograph is the fifth plate in Vuillard’s 1899 series Landscapes and Interiors. Pink wallpaper with a dense red pattern spreads across most of the room, making furniture and figures harder to separate from their surroundings. The print brings the patterned intimacy of a domestic space onto paper; it is not an oil painting of the same subject.
