Find the pale house at the left, then follow the bands of garden and trees beyond its roof. Where do individual leaves give way to a larger pattern?
Vuillard’s 1899 landscape looks across rooftops toward trees and an open garden. Patches of yellow-green foliage and pale ground sit between dark roofs and trunks. Rather than separating the buildings sharply from their surroundings, he repeats colors and textures across them, giving the view the density of a patterned surface.
