Notice the notched outline of the fan, then follow the sprays of small leaves and pale flowers as they cross in front of the moon.
This print was made for a round, flat fan, an uchiwa, and its curved outline, with a notch at the bottom, follows the shape of the fan. Fans were everyday summer accessories, the V&A notes, so fewer fan prints survive than other prints. Ogata Gekkō, who won prizes at world’s fairs in the United States and Europe, signed it below the full moon, beside the stream.
