Compare the cluster of figures on the right with the finished La Grande Jatte. Which poses disappeared as Seurat revised the scene?
Only about twenty-four centimeters wide, this wooden panel is one of more than twenty painted studies for La Grande Jatte. Its figures were still provisional: the group on the right was replaced in the finished canvas by the prominent standing couple and the woman’s monkey. The study records a composition in progress.
