Compare the two standing figures with the lower seated bodies, then trace the openings of pale sky between the trees.
This bathers composition dates to 1890–94, earlier than Chicago’s larger, blue-toned The Bathers of 1899–1904. Here upright bodies and trees alternate with lower seated figures. The figures remain distinct, but their warm and cool patches of paint also connect them to the ground, water, and foliage.
