While living at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh reworked images by artists he admired. This painting interprets a wood engraving after Honoré Daumier’s scene of drinkers, whose figures represent different ages. Working from a printed composition let Van Gogh concentrate on his own decisions about paint, color, and rhythm.
