Find the eagle at upper left and the winged bull at upper right with their Latin banners, then follow John’s pointing hand across to Jesus.
About 1655 Murillo painted four large canvases on John the Baptist for San Leandro, a convent in his home city of Seville, and this is one. John points to Jesus, while verses from the gospels of Luke and John hang in the clouds beside the eagle and winged bull, emblems of those two evangelists. Its softer, hazier handling shows Murillo leaving behind the crisp edges and strong shadows he took from Zurbarán.
