Find Jacob, Laban and the daughters at lower left, follow the herd toward the trees, and look past them to the arches in the distance.
Born in Lorraine, Claude spent his career in Italy, and its landscape was the chief subject of his paintings, prints and drawings. Here a sunlit valley with a Roman aqueduct in the distance is the setting for a story from Genesis, in which Jacob offers Laban his flocks in return for the hand of Laban’s daughter Rachel. Claude signed and dated the drawing in Rome in 1661.
