Sit with the shepherd on the rock at right and look out across the dark slopes and rounded trees to the pale line of the sea.
The Sasso is a large rock about ten miles south of Civitavecchia, the seaport of Rome, and Claude seems to have made this drawing at the rock itself. Thin washes of ink suggest the rolling land and the sea rather than describe them, and single trees stand out as simple, almost geometric shapes. For nearly a hundred years after Claude died, Grand Tour travelers measured the real landscapes they saw against his.
