See how the white chrysanthemums stand out against leaves of dark ink and blue-green, then find the cluster of orange-red blooms near the center.
Kitagawa Sōsetsu worked for the Maeda, the powerful lords of what is now Ishikawa Prefecture on the northern coast of Honshū. He is thought to have studied with Tawaraya Sōsetsu, a pupil of Tawaraya Sōtatsu, the Kyoto master seen as the founder of the style later named Rinpa, and the Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the Maeda chose a painter of this line to tie their taste to the imperial capital. His seal, Inen, appears at lower right.
