Flowers and Grasses, Kitagawa Sōsetsu
Flowers and Grasses, mid-1600s

Kitagawa Sōsetsu

Active 1639–50 · Japanese painting · 4 works

Kitagawa Sōsetsu arranges flowers and grasses across screens and hanging scrolls. His large paired screens spread clusters of plants through an open field, while smaller works bring blossoms and leaves closer. In Summer Flowers, diluted ink and color pool inside the leaves, and fine gold lines mark their veins. Cleveland connects the screens with the Maeda family’s grand residences, where paintings could shape the setting of a room.
