Hon’ami Kōetsu
1558–1637 · Japanese painting · 1 work
Hon’ami Kōetsu (1558 to 1637) was a calligrapher, ceramist, lacquer artist, sword connoisseur and tea master who did much to shape the art of the early Edo period. Like the painter Tawaraya Sōtatsu, he belonged to Kyoto’s wealthy, educated merchant class, which mixed with the nobility, and the two often made poem scrolls together on decorated paper.
