Look for the tiny dabs of white that make the sunlight shimmer on the land, then follow the man in the red coat along the road with the pack animals.
Pack animals loaded with baskets and bundles cross hilly country in a hazy, golden light. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that Cuyp never visited Italy, yet here he summons its hills and warm sun, and the National Gallery credits Utrecht painters, above all Jan Both, back from Rome around 1641, with turning him toward this Italianate kind of landscape.
