Follow the line of cows and sheep along the bank to the sailboat, then look across the water to the tower of Vianen.
In this early view, Aelbert Cuyp still paints in the warm, nearly single-color manner of the older Jan van Goyen, as the Art Institute of Chicago observes. A herdsman stands with his cattle and sheep on a rise above the river, and the town of Vianen lies low on the far bank under a heavy, glowing sky.
