See how the brown wash deepens in the shade of the tree and thins to bare paper in the sky and the distant hills.
Claude was a prolific draftsman whose drawings dwell on the peace of the Roman countryside. By tradition this sheet passed from his estate to Queen Christina of Sweden in Rome and then to the Odescalchi family, and it reached the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1982. Under a spreading tree, a seated shepherd, a standing youth and a dog meet two women in classical dress.
