Find the small group at the bottom, where an angel kneels with fruit for the Child and Joseph reads at the right, then look up at the trees that tower over them.

Claude’s specialty was the ideal landscape: nature arranged to look calmer and more harmonious than any real place, with hints of an imagined golden past. He set this Gospel story in the countryside around Rome: on their flight into Egypt, the Holy Family rest on a shady bank while angels kneel to hand the Christ Child fruit. Wealthy collectors across Europe sought such scenes as a peaceful escape from busy city life.
