The Capture of Samson, Peter Paul Rubens
The Capture of Samson, 1609–10

Peter Paul Rubens

1577–1640 · Baroque · 16 works

Peter Paul Rubens brought an appetite for movement and storytelling to paintings made for churches, courts, and private patrons. Years spent studying in Italy supplied ideas from ancient sculpture and Renaissance painting that he developed in Antwerp with a large workshop. His career also included diplomacy between European courts. Small studies offer an intimate way into this ambitious practice: a rapid arrangement of bodies, gestures, and light could establish a composition before a much larger painting was made. Portraits and drawings reveal quieter encounters alongside the dramatic narratives.
