In Bologna the brothers Annibale and Agostino Carracci and their cousin Ludovico renewed painting through close study of nature, and founded an academy whose pupils included Guido Reni. Annibale moved to Rome by 1595 to decorate the Palazzo Farnese. Agostino, trained as an engraver, appears here with a portrait drawing and an unfinished print.
